Selling a childhood home

Selling a childhood home can be an emotional and challenging task, especially if your parents are downsizing or moving to assisted living. Perhaps one or both of them have passed away, and you are now tasked with selling the home. This can feel overwhelming, but with the right plan and approach, the process can be much more manageable. Joyce and Cathy (The Joy Team) have helped many families prepare and sell a family home and can help you too.  From deciding what to keep and what can be sold or donated to readying the home for market, Joyce and Cathy have the resources and experience to make this transition as smooth as possible.  WHY? Well, first of all, they have experienced it first hand with their own parents.  And, to be perfectly honest, it’s stressful.  Especially for an elderly person who is having to say goodbye to things they have owned and cherished for years.  A china cabinet full of heirloom plates, glasses and collectables.  A room full of sports memorabilia. A workshop with your grandfather’s tools.  These are all real life scenarios. You are not alone in this.

This home belonged to the Loop family.  One of the many families The Joy Team has helped. They purchased the home in 1962 and raised a family there.  So many wonderful memories.  When it came time to sell the home The Joy Team helped the family prepare the home for sale including:

Finding an estate company to sell the items the family did not want.  The proceeds were very helpful!

Coordinating a home inspector to do a pre-inspection made available to buyers.

Coordinating a cleaning crew to clean surfaces, windows, etc.

Coordinating a professional photographer so the home showed it’s best.

Opening the escrow account so that escrow has any needed documents in advance, such as a Power of Attorney and/or Death Certificate, so that the family wasn’t scrambling to find these things after an offer was excepted.

Another option for seniors is to “age in place.”  Whether in their current home or in a new home that is more suited to the needs of seniors.  For example, a home without stairs or a 55+ Community with lots of social activities.  The Joy Team has teamed up with Caring.com to provide you with comprehensive information about aging in place.  CLICK HERE for that link.  And, here is another great link about whether or not it makes sense to downsize.  SENIOR DOWNSIZING TIPS click here.

The Joy Team are here to help you and your family too!  Please feel free to reach out to Joyce and Cathy anytime.  We work with families at all stages of the process so it’s never to early to start planning.  CALL TODAY AT 253-380-2808 OR EMAIL AT JOYCESHIPLEY@WINDERMERE.COM.
